All the scholarships that I indicated were a mix of need-based and merit scholarships, I was giving the total for each school. UPenn and USC have been my dream schools and even though USC has the 3% acceptance rate #1 game design program in the world with the L.A. connections, I picked Penn since the degree is one in engineering and doesn't lock me down to just game design (since the industry is notorious for being sorta toxic) and it's cheaper (both are cheaper than my state school, uhhh wtf UMD) and close to home (plus the ivy league prestige lowkey). If I do want to go into game design, I can do my master's at USC. I feel incredibly lucky in getting into these amazing programs, and after seeing most of my magnet school peers not have as much luck as I have had, here are my insights (they are guesses though) about getting in: Have your application have a certain theme or story, especially around a specific major or field if possible. My application totally revolved around the story that I was a STEM-heavy student that wanted to combine my passion with the arts, particularly through game design. I applied to specialized programs that allowed me to truly show a unique application. When it comes to Ivy and T20's, everyone has the 1520+ SAT and 15 AP's with similar EC's. Use a compelling essay, or better yet a portfolio if you have the opportunity (I am incredibly lucky to have an option for this to submit for my majors) to showcase what you've done and why you should have a place at the school. School fit does sorta matter. I know it's a really weird word and it's confusing to even define, but admissions officers and interviewers want students that fit with the general vibe of the school while still crafting a class of unique people from different backgrounds and fields. So for example, UPenn is known for the preprofessional culture where everyone is career-oriented and might know what they want to do or is at least driven to have an overall goal in a specific field (like starting a company or research on a specific project). I'm not sure how it is for other schools but some research online could help you out. If you wanna prestige whore a bit lmao then fit your supplemental essays for the school you're writing and keep in mind the type of person you're looking for (Brown and Penn are probably not looking for the same type of student). Or just be genuine and the school(s) you do fit will accept you. Don't do Comp Sci (jk). Almost all my friends applied for CS and didn't have much luck and my UCLA application for CS was my only rejection. CS is really hard and competitive (especially now) and since it's so saturated, if you want to go to a T5 CS school or something you have to have an insane resume of EC's and competitions and a bunch of valuable personal projects that prove you're a CS god.
